How To Fix A Dented Garage Door Panel

If you’ve ever had a dent in your garage door, you know that it’s better to fix the dent and fix it quickly, so it doesn’t break worse. It’s essential to fix your dented garage door in order to continue using it properly. If you don’t get your panel fixed, it can damage the entire door, and you could potentially have to get a whole new garage door. This blog will explain how to fix a dented garage door panel.

Disconnect The Motor From The Garage Door

Disconnect The Motor From The Garage Door
Before you can begin your garage door panel repair, you need to disconnect the motor from the garage door panel. The easiest way to do this is to detach the wire harness from both sides of the panel and remove any screws connecting it to the hinges on either side of the panel as well. After disconnecting these items, you can lift up the panel and remove it from its tracks.

Take The Panel Off The Garage Door

Before you can replace the panel, you have to remove it from the garage door. For this step, you will need a Phillips screwdriver, a socket wrench, and an impact driver, if necessary. You may also need an extra set of hands for assistance with removing some of the larger panels.

Begin by removing all of the screws holding the panel in place using your screwdriver and socket wrench. You may need an impact driver if there are too many screws or if they are rusted into place. Once all of the screws have been removed, pull off the panel carefully so as not to damage any other parts of your garage door or wall when it falls free from its frame.

Repair The Dent

There are multiple ways to repair a garage door dent. Dents can usually be repaired before the garage door breaks worse. Do this by using a hammer and chisel. Use the hammer to tap around the dent until it pops out. Use sandpaper or steel wool to smooth over any rough edges or sharp points that may have resulted from removing the dent. Then use touch-up paint to cover the area with a color that matches your existing paint job. This process is relatively simple. However, it needs to be done when you have enough time to get the job done.

Another way to repair the dent is to use a hair dryer. Often the heat will allow the metal to snap back into place. This will take a moment because the metal has to get relatively hot before the heat can work on the dent.
