If you’re like me, and not much of a car guy, a garage can feel like mostly wasted space. If you want to turn your garage from just storage space and a car-port into the perfect workspace— either for work, study, or your hobby, then you will surely want to turn your garage into a home office! While home renovation jobs can be intimidating, Pacific Experts Garage Doors is here to help you map out what you’ll need to transform your garage into a space that you will love!
Insulate the Walls and the Garage Door
The first thing that you will notice about spending an extended amount of time in your garage will be that it is not insulated. You will either get incredibly hot or cold depending on the time of year. So the first thing that you will need to do in order to turn your garage into a home office is to insulate the room.
You will need to insulate the 3 main walls and the garage door. You can choose to insulate the garage door panels, add new weatherstripping to the garage door, or you may choose to replace your garage door altogether for a more professional feel to your new workspace.
Add Flooring
It’s pretty likely that your garage floor is concrete and has plenty of oil stains from your car leaking. That can make your garage feel uncomfortable and look unappealing which is not conducive to a productive home office.
Give your garage a pressure wash to remove any oil stains and then lay the flooring of your choice. If you want to keep the concrete look you can, but laminate and tile flooring are pretty easy to do and rather inexpensive options.
Don’t Forget the Power Outlets
No home office is complete (or functional) without the proper power outlets to power your computers and electronic devices. Most garages have a single power outlet that the garage door operator uses. This is conveniently located on the ceiling. So while you are insulating the walls, it would be smart to have some electrical outlets installed as well. This will kill 2 birds with one stone and you will be thanking yourself later.
You’ll Need Cable and Internet
And of course, while you are installing electricity and power outlets in your garage, you should have a cable outlet installed so that you don’t have to worry about having a slow internet connection from inside the rest of the house.
Install an HVAC Unit
Once your new home office is mostly complete, you will want to make sure that you have adequate heating and cooling. You can either purchase a portable space heating and cooling unit. These are pretty inexpensive and do a great job of regulating the temperature of your transformed garage. The other common option is to have a new HVAC unit installed.
Finally, decorate the space to your liking and you are all set.
