The fall can be a great time to have a garage sale. As summer winds down, you’ll find more people out and about, enjoying the cool weather before the cold weather really hits. You may want to take advantage of this time to clear out your home of all the extra clutter lying around. You could donate belongings that you have no use for, but first, you might want to try to make some of your money back by selling it for at least something! Planning a successful garage sale can be a lot of work, but at Pacific Experts Garage Door, we’ve put together our favorite tips for you.
Pick a Date
First things first, you need to pick a day to have your garage sale. The best day to have a garage sale may vary from place to place, but garage sales tend to do well on Saturday mornings. Generally, people will wake up early on Saturday to get a jump on some great thrifty deals! If you want to maximize your potential to make a nice chunk of change, you can hold your garage sale over the course of 2 or 3 days.
Team up With Neighbors
If you have some neighbors on board with clearing out their homes of clutter with you, you should consider pairing up to make your sale really worth it! By having a neighborhood sale, not only are you making the garage sale bigger and more appealing to buyers, but you can also use the added network to get the word out.
Get Your Items Together
Once you’ve settled on the right date, it’s time to get all of your belongings together. When you’re deciding what to keep and what to sell, you should stick to a hard-fast rule: if you don’t use it regularly, it needs to go. Hanging on to belongings for too long is why you’re even having a sale to begin with.
Next, you need to figure out how to display your items. The best way to do this is to separate items by categories. Keep it simple for your customers: keep kitchen items together, keep children’s toys together, Men’s clothing together, so on and so forth.
Pro Tip: If you have a place to hang clothes to display it, you should! It will make your items look better-taken care of than if you just threw them in a pile on the floor.
Get the Word Out: Craigslist, Facebook, Make Yard Sale Sign
If you really want to have a successful garage sale, you’re going to need to get the word out. There are a ton of places that you can advertise your garage sale for free. A craigslist listing or a Facebook post letting people know that you will be having a sale will definitely bring in more people from outside of your neighborhood.
Additionally, Yard-Sale signs are time tested and very effective ways of getting the word out. Not everyone goes online to look for garage sales, but almost everyone will go out of their way to stop by a garage sale if they drive by a sign!
Put in the extra prep time and you’re well on track to having a very successful garage sale.
